Many search queries revolve around dethrottling, unlocking or making an e-scooter faster. Technically, software, controller, motor and battery can influence driving performance. What counts for use on public transport areas in Austria is whether the vehicle still meets the legal definition of an e-scooter.
If an e-scooter is modified so that its design speed is over 25 km/h or its power is over 600 watts, it no longer meets the Austrian e-scooter definition for normal public use. A hidden app setting or unlocking that can be activated at short notice does not solve this problem.
Why can unthrottling change the legal classification?
In Austria, a maximum design speed of 25 km/h and a maximum of 600 watts of power are required for e-scooters. The technical design is crucial, not just the currently selected speed level. If a faster configuration can be activated at any time using a key combination or app, you should not assume that the slower mode will automatically make the vehicle legally compliant.

What risks arise from tuning?
- Braking distance: Higher speed increases the energy that has to be dissipated when braking. Tires and brakes cannot be designed for this.
- Thermal: Controller, motor, cable and battery can become more stressed and warmer.
- Range: More speed and strong acceleration often significantly reduce the possible distance.
- Component wear: Tires, bearings, folding mechanisms and brake components are subject to greater stress.
- Guarantee and warranty: Changes that have not been approved can make it difficult to assess a defect.
- Liability and insurance: After an accident, the technical change can become relevant.
How can an e-scooter legally become livelier and more efficient?
A sluggish driving experience or loss of speed does not have to be due to a throttle. Maintenance and diagnostics often help without changing limit values:
- Check tire pressure according to manufacturer’s instructions: Too low pressure increases rolling resistance and risk of punctures.
- Charge the battery and note the temperature: A cold or worn battery delivers less performance under load.
- Check brakes for grinding: An incorrectly adjusted brake can permanently slow down the bike.
- Check bearings and wheels: Stiffness and damage cost energy.
- Use enabled driving mode: Only use settings that the manufacturer and specific vehicle variant provide.
- Reduce payload: Unnecessary weight affects acceleration and range.

The better solution: choose the right variant before purchasing
If you regularly drive uphill, you shouldn’t just look at top speed. The decisive factors are a legal power range, sufficient torque, realistic range reserve, reliable brakes and the permissible load capacity. A test drive shows more than a data sheet.
Have the design speed, performance and features of the variant actually delivered confirmed. Caution is advised if an offer mainly advertises unlocking, hidden sports mode or extreme speeds.
