One legal basis, nine regional entry points
The basic rules for e-scooters are in Section 68a of the Austrian Road Traffic Act and apply in all federal states. In particular, signposted cycle routes, clearances in pedestrian zones, construction sites, temporary closures and requirements for rental scooters may vary locally.

The most important e-scooter rules in Austria
Maximum permissible power
The vehicle class includes electrically powered small and mini scooters with a maximum of 600 watts.
Design speed
The design speed for this vehicle class may not exceed 25 km/h.
Helmet requirement
People under 16 must wear a helmet when riding an e-scooter.
Alcohol limit
The legal alcohol limit has been 0.5 per mille since May 1, 2026.
Where can you drive?
- Existing cycling facilities must always be used.
- Roadways may be used if cycling is permitted there.
- Sidewalks and footpaths may not be used in a longitudinal direction.
- Pedestrian zones only with official approval and with adjusted speed.
- Residential streets and meeting areas only operate at speeds adapted to pedestrian traffic.
What does the scooter have to have?
- Effective braking device and bell or horn
- White reflectors at the front, red at the rear and yellow at the sides
- Yellow indicators at the ends of the steering handles
- In the dark, white headlights and red taillights
- Safe state according to the configuration actually used
