After an accident, it’s not just who caused the damage that counts. What is also crucial is how the specific scooter is legally classified and which policy actually applies. Terms such as household insurance or accident protection do not automatically mean that every e-scooter damage is covered.
For a normal e-scooter within the Austrian borders with a maximum design speed of 25 km/h and 600 watts, motor vehicle liability insurance is not automatically required as is the case with e-mopeds. However, please check private liability, private accident protection and theft coverage expressly in your policy. Faster or more powerful vehicles may be classified differently.
Does an e-scooter need compulsory insurance in Austria?
First, the vehicle must be classified correctly. An e-scooter for normal public use remains within the legal performance and speed limits. A stronger, faster or unlocked model may fall out of this category. Then approval, registration, license plates and motor vehicle liability can become relevant.
Therefore, check the data sheet, specific model variant and any technical changes. Our overview of the E-scooter rules in Austria explains the distinction. This contribution does not replace individual insurance or legal advice.
Which insurance can cover which damage?
| Damage | Possible protection | What to pay attention to? |
|---|---|---|
| Damage to another person or property | Private liability | E-scooters and performance limits must be included in the contract |
| Own permanent injury | Private accident insurance | Check benefits, degree of disability and exclusions |
| theft | Household, bicycle or special cover | Storage location, lock, time of night and maximum amount |
| Damage to your own scooter | Comprehensive or special product | Deductible, current value and battery damage |
Home insurance often includes personal liability, but coverage and exclusions vary. Have the inclusion of your specific model confirmed in writing.
Is an e-scooter accident on the way to work insured?
When it comes to statutory accident protection, it depends on the connection with the insured activity and the specific cause of the accident. The AUVA describes both protected operational uses and limits on general travel risks. Therefore, do not rely on the blanket statement that every commute is automatically covered.
The five-question check for your policy
- Is the specific e-scooter included in terms of performance and design speed?
- How high is the liability coverage and deductible?
- Does theft protection apply on the go, in the common room and at night?
- What type of lock and evidence does the insurer require?
- What changes due to tuning, commercial use or a driver under 16?
What should you document after an accident or theft?
Secure the scene of the accident, contact details, photos, witnesses, serial number, invoice and proof of lock. If anyone is injured, the police should be notified. Report the damage promptly and only change or repair the scooter after consultation if an assessment may be necessary.
