The best e-scooter is not automatically the most powerful or the one with the longest range. It must fit the route, body size, transport routes and the applicable rules in Austria. These seven criteria help to compare offers objectively.
First check the Austrian limit values and the equipment required since May 2026. Then compare realistic range, weight, tires, brakes, ergonomics as well as spare parts and workshop offerings. Buy the specific variant, not just a well-known model name.
1. Does the model fit the rules in Austria?
For normal use as an e-scooter on public traffic areas, a maximum design speed of 25 km/h and a maximum of 600 watts of power apply. Since May 1, 2026, a bell or horn and yellow indicators on the ends of the handlebars have been mandatory. Effective brakes, reflectors and lights are also required in the dark and with poor visibility.

2. What range do you really need?
Write down the daily outward and return route and plan reserves. Manufacturer values arise under certain test conditions. In practice, temperature, gradients, driver weight, stop-and-go, tire pressure and driving mode influence consumption.

3. Test the weight and folding size in everyday life
A heavy scooter can seem stable on the road, but quickly becomes impractical on stairs, in the basement or when transferring. Check:
- Do you have to carry the scooter every day?
- Does the folded vehicle fit in a car, elevator or storage room?
- Can the folding mechanism lock securely and without play?
- Is the permissible load greater than the driver’s weight and permitted luggage?
When taking the model for a test drive, actually lift it up. A difference of a few kilograms is abstract in the data sheet, but is clearly noticeable on a staircase.
4. Pneumatic tires or solid rubber?
Pneumatic tires usually offer more comfort and grip, but require correct air pressure and can get a flat tire. Solid rubber tires are more puncture-proof, but transfer bumps more strongly and change the driving experience. Suspension, tire size and surface must be considered together.

5. Practically check the brakes, lights and indicators
A braking system can consist of mechanical and electronic brakes. It’s not just the name that’s important, but whether the delay can be dosed in a controlled manner. During the test ride, both hands should be able to remain securely on the handlebars.
- Is the brake lever easy to reach?
- Does the scooter decelerate smoothly and without pulling too hard?
- Are lights and indicators also visible in daylight?
- Do cables and wires remain unloaded when folded?
6. Consider spare parts and workshop before purchasing
Tires, tubes and brake components are wearing parts. The charger, mudguard, display or folding mechanism can also become relevant later. A cheap purchase becomes expensive if suitable parts cannot be identified or no one repairs the model.
