E-scooters in the rain: Understanding IPX4 to IPX7 correctly

Waterproof is not waterproof: What IPX4, IPX5, IPX6 and IPX7 mean and how to react correctly after a rainy ride.

Tested for Austria

Rain is not the same as immersion. Nevertheless, “waterproof” is often understood too generously in offers. With an e-scooter, the vehicle, display and battery can have different types of protection.

Short answer

Check the IP information of the specific model. IPX4 protects against splash water, higher levels allow defined, heavier water exposure; they are not an invitation to deep puddles or high-pressure cleaning. A damaged, opened or aged scooter may be less protected.

What do IPX4, IPX5, IPX6 and IPX7 mean?

stageSimplified meaning
IPX4Protection against splashing water from different directions
IPX5Protection against water jets under defined test conditions
IPX6Protection against stronger water jets under test conditions
IPX7Protection against temporary immersion under defined conditions

The key figure is a laboratory test, not an unlimited guarantee. Check whether the information applies to the entire scooter or just to one component.

What is practically risky when it rains?

  • Deep puddles can flood the wheel hub, bearings, deck and connectors.
  • Wet roads reduce grip and increase braking distances.
  • Road markings, metal and leaves become particularly slippery.
  • Damaged seals or charging sockets allow water to enter more easily.

Avoid driving in heavy rain, floods and poor visibility. Adjust your speed and do not steer or brake abruptly.

This is how the scooter dries after the ride

  1. Switch off and leave the charging socket closed.
  2. Dry surface with soft cloth.
  3. Store upright in a ventilated, moderately warm place.
  4. Do not charge immediately if the connections or housing may be wet.
  5. No hot air, no high-pressure cleaner and no opening the battery.

Warning sign for water penetration

Flickering display, unexpected shutdown, error messages, corrosion, foggy lights, unusual smell or heat require testing. If you suspect this, stop charging the scooter.

Information on safe handling of the battery is available in Battery practical guide.

IP protection and warranty are not the same thing

Read the operating instructions and warranty conditions. Document the model, protection class and condition. Seals can be compromised after repairs or falls.

Frequently asked questions

Is an e-scooter waterproof with IPX5?

No. IPX5 describes limited protection against water jets under test conditions, not permanent submersion.

Can I hose down the scooter?

Only if the manufacturer allows the specific cleaning method. Pressure washers are risky for seals and connections.

When can I charge after it rains?

Only when the vehicle, charging socket and plug are safely dry and inconspicuous.
