E-scooters are light, valuable and can often only be locked at small frame points. A lock only provides meaningful protection if the type of lock, connection point and storage location match.
A thin cable lock is only suitable as a short additional security. For regular parking, a high-quality U-lock, folding lock or strong chain lock and a fixed connection point are useful. Close through a supporting frame part, not just the handlebars, wheel or mudguard.
Which type of lock fits the e-scooter?
| Castle | Strength | border |
|---|---|---|
| U-lock | High resistance with good quality | Rigid shape does not fit every frame |
| folding lock | Good compromise between transport and range | Compare joints and brackets |
| Chain lock | Flexible on posts and brackets | Difficult with high security |
| Cable lock | Lightweight and flexible | Usually can be severed quickly |
This is how the scooter is locked properly
- Choose a firmly anchored object that cannot be pulled out.
- Guide the lock through a supporting, closed frame part.
- Leave little free space for tools.
- Do not leave the lock on the floor.
- If possible, use a second lock for the wheel or folding mechanism.
A scooter that is only blocked within itself can be carried away. App locks do not replace a mechanical connection.
The storage location is part of the protection
Illuminated, frequented and visible places are better than hidden corners. A locked common room is not automatically risk-free. If possible, the scooter should be left in its own locked area overnight without blocking escape routes.
What’s the point of alarm and GPS?
A motion alarm can attract attention; GPS can support location. Both systems do not prevent the lock from being broken. Check battery usage, mobile phone costs, data protection and whether the tracker can be mounted inconspicuously but securely.
This data belongs in the proof of ownership
Take photos of the scooter, serial number and lock. Keep the invoice, model name and special features separately. Check your theft insurance requirements before anything happens.
Frequently asked questions
Is a cable lock enough?
A thin cable usually offers too little resistance for longer or unattended parking.
Where can the lock be attached?
On a supporting frame part that cannot be easily dismantled or cut. Cables, mudguards and handlebar grips are unsuitable.
Does GPS prevent theft?
No. GPS only supports positioning and should be supplemented by mechanical security.
