Buying a used e-scooter: 17-point check for willingness

Battery, invoice, serial number, brakes and test drive: With this checklist you can identify risks with a used e-scooter.

Tested for Austria

A cheap used e-scooter can be a good buy. However, missing documents, a tired battery or hidden water damage quickly make the supposed bargain more expensive than a tested vehicle.

Short answer

Do not buy a used e-scooter without a serial number, original invoice, suitable charger and test drive. Check all 17 points and calculate tires, brakes and a possible battery replacement before comparing prices.

What should be clarified before the viewing

Ask for model name, serial number, date of purchase, mileage, reason for sale and photos of the charger, tires, underside and folding joint. Ask specifically about crashes, rain rides, repairs, tuning and app binding.

The 17 points for buying used

  1. Serial number present and readable
  2. Original invoice or traceable proof of ownership
  3. Model corresponds to 25 km/h and 600 watts
  4. No tuning or unlockable mode
  5. Original, undamaged charger
  6. Battery charges without heat, smell or error message
  7. Range plausibly depends on age
  8. No cracks or deformation on the frame
  9. Folding mechanism locks without excessive play
  10. Handlebars and bearings run without clicking
  11. Tires without cracks, dents or visible casing
  12. Rims run smoothly
  13. Brakes work evenly
  14. Lights, indicators, bell and display work
  15. Charging socket is dry and not discolored
  16. App account can be separated from the seller
  17. Spare parts and workshop service are available

What does the test drive show?

Start slowly on a safe surface. Pay attention to straight running, handlebar fluttering, grinding noises, jerky acceleration and the braking effect. Don’t just test the strongest mode. After driving, the motor, battery and plug must not smell noticeably hot or make any noise.

How can the battery be checked without a laboratory?

A short test drive does not prove full capacity. Compare age, mileage, displayed state of charge and voltage drop under load. A diagnostic report is more valuable than a statement that the battery is “like new”. Instructions for care are included Battery Guide.

Record the handover in writing

Record name, date, price, model, serial number, accessories, known defects and mileage. Have the payment confirmed. In the case of private purchases, warranty rights may be restricted; Obvious ambiguities should be clarified before payment.

Frequently asked questions

How do I recognize a stolen scooter?

A missing proof of ownership, removed serial number or evasive information are warning signs. In this case, do not buy.

How much is an old battery worth?

It is not age alone, but rather capacity, cell condition, storage and spare parts price that determine the value.

Should I buy without a test drive?

Only if the condition, right of return and risk are clearly regulated. A test drive is particularly important for private sales.
